How we can help against COVID-19?
As a growing number of patients are being placed on ventilators due to severe respiratory complications associated with COVID-19, Dr. Hsien-Yung Lai in Taiwan has designed what he has dubbed the "Aerosol Box" to enable physicians to intubate a patient while better shielding themselves from any aerosol particles that could be released from the patient's airway during the procedure.
Inspired by Dr. Lai's invention, which is generously registered under a Creative Commons license for public use, we have created a variation by using transparent vinyl fabric as the protective shield.
In this design, the outer frame is pre-assembled by PVC pipes, and the protective shield made by transparent vinyl fabric can be easily attached to the frame. With the set of vinyl fabric being disposable and replaceable, the resulting device is a robust and sturdy shield box that can be rapidly deployed at point of use in the current crisis.

The outer frame is constructed by pipes of Schedule 40 PVC, which has high tensile and impact strength. Durable 26 gauge (0.3mm) clear vinyl is sewed into the shape of protective shield. To set up the device, unfold the protective shield and attach its corners to the preset rings at the corresponding corners of the frame. In this case, 8 cable ties are used to secure the position of the protective shield as well as to provide proper tension to it. (California residents click here for Proposition 65).
